Doctoral Research Seminar – Liron Schwartz-Aviad, Supervised by Prof. Zahavit Kohen

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a research seminar was presented by Liron Schwartz-Aviad, a doctoral student under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Zehavit Kohen, on the topic:

From Diagnosis to Instruction: Investigating Teachers’ Real-Time Competencies in Teaching Mathematical Modelling

The study explores mathematics teachers’ competencies to identify the learning challenges students encounter while solving mathematical modelling tasks and to adaptively respond them in real time instruction. Based on classroom observation analysis, indicators of diagnostic and instructional practices were identified, along with three distinct patterns of pedagogical responses aimed at supporting students’ learning challenges. The findings offer a new theoretical model for understanding the pedagogical expertise required for adaptive and effective modelling instruction, emphasizing the integration of diagnostic and instructional competencies.
